Years ago, after what was to be a life changing automobile accident, I discovered the amazing effects that exercising the muscles of the face and neck had on the injuries I sustained during that accident. The experience was life changing because it left me with a newfound recognition that it is often possible to find alternatives to the generally prescribed course of treatment. I suffered a debilitating injury involving my neck and my temporomandibular joint, or TMJ. I had incredidibly sharp pain that ran across my face. My bottom jaw was left misaligned and glided to one side when I opened my mouth. It popped and cracked so loudly whenever I tried to eat solid food that the sound was audible to others around me. A surgical specialist advised me that surgery was the only way to minimize my pain and restore normal form and function to my face. The proposed procedure required incisions to be made on both sides of my face (possibly leaving scars) in an attempt to tighten the muscles and ligaments and hopefully relieve the pain and correct the misalignment. There was no guarantee this procedure would work, and my mouth would be wired shut, which meant that I would be on a strictly liquid diet for a sustained period of time. Thankfully, I sought a second opinion and was directed to a physician specializing in facial and cranial rehabilitation. His approach included treating the injuries with a series of strenghtening exercises to help eliminate the pain and correct the misalignment naturally. As clumsy and difficult as they were to perform, the exercises really worked. but what happened next was truly amazing: not only were the muscles that had been directly affected by the injury toned, tightened and pain free, but so were the surrounding muscles.
